DHS to Hold Workshops on Operating a Summer Camp in Territory

Anyone who has ever wanted to start and operate a summer camp, are invited to join the Department of Human Services (DHS), which will be presenting workshops titled “Mass Consultation for Summer Camps” in both districts. It will be an informative seminar on how to operate a fun and safe summer camp.

DHS Office of Child Care and Regulatory Services in collaboration with the Department of Health (Sanitation), Department of Planning and Natural Resources, Department of Education (School and Nutrition Program), and the V.I. Fire and Environmental Services will go over what is required to operate summer camps by their respective agencies.

The seminar is an annual event that helps prepare prospective applicants by guiding them through the licensure process.  Adequate information will be given to attendees, and they will be able to ask questions directly to each of the agencies present to ensure clear understanding of what is required prior to starting a summer camp.

This three-hour workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, March 21, on St. Croix at the District Court, Golden Rock. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, March 22, on St. Thomas in the Video Conference Room, at the DHS Knud Hansen Complex, Building A.

“I think this workshop will be helpful to those who have wanted to but never knew how to safely operate a summer camp,” Commissioner Designee Felecia L. Blyden said. “This seminar will help educate our residents in preparing them to get licensed and to ensure that their camps meet safety regulations.”

“There is a lot of work to be done before opening and operating a summer camp that will promote fun as well as safety,” Blyden said.  “The DHS and other professionals who will be presenting at this seminar will guide you and steer you in the right direction.  I encourage everyone to utilize them to provide the answers that you will need.”

Those interested must register to secure seating.  Call 774-0930, ext. 4180 for Valerie Price-Jones on St. Thomas and 773-2323, ext. 2027 for Michelle Simon on St. Croix.
