Earth Day Science Event to Teach Gardening of Coral Trees

The public is invited to join researchers from 12:30-2 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22, at UVI’s Center for Marine and Environmental Studies to learn about coral gardening and help build a “coral tree” that will be used in a real coral nursery. People can take this opportunity to make an actual difference in the community by participating in planting mangrove sprouts. Mangroves provide essential habitats for the juvenile fish of many species and protect shorelines from storm erosion. The event will take place.

All ages are welcome, and there will be activities held for all ages. Contact Howard Forbes Jr. with questions or for directions at 693-1672.

Science Saturday events are hosted by VI-EPSCoR, (Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) in partnership with the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) to engage the community in the world-class marine research taking place at UVI. Topics vary greatly but are always fascinating and relevant to life in the U.S.V.I. Visit VI-EPSCoR online at www.viepscor.org.
