National Park Service Offering 3-Day Red Cross Course to Certify As Lifeguard

The National Park Service (NPS) is offering individuals wanting to become an American Red Cross (ARC) certified lifeguard a three-day ARC course on St. John, which will include CPR/AED/First Aid/Waterfront training and certification

To be certified a person must be able to swim at least 550 yards and submerge up to seven feet. There will be a skills test on the first day that will include the following:

  • Swim 550 yards continuously (no time limit)
  • Timed mock “rescue”
  • Tread water for two minutes with no hands
  • Retrieve three dive rings in approximately seven feet of water

The cost is $35 per person. The class will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 29; 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 and Aug. 5
