Courts to Have Limited Resumption of Operations Oct. 2

Chief Justice Hodge advises the public and members of the Virgin Islands Bar of the limited resumption of operations for the judicial branch effective Monday, Oct. 2. All employees are asked to report to their respective duty stations based on curfew hours, according to a release from the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands.

District of St. Thomas and St. John:

Except for jury trials, normal operations shall resume in the St. Thomas-St. John District for the Supreme Court, Superior Court and Magistrate Division. All employees are required to report on Monday, Oct. 2.

District of St. Croix:

Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands: The Supreme Court on St. Croix shall remain closed until running water is restored in the town of Frederiksted. Filings will continue to be accepted via secured lock box at No. 18 Strand Street Frederiksted.

Superior Court of the Virgin Islands: Limited services will continue in the District of St. Croix. Advice of Rights will be held Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Domestic Violence cases shall be heard on Wednesdays. Arraignments will resume on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

All such matters in the District of St. Croix shall commence at 12:30 p.m. to coincide with curfew limitations. Court employees are required to report consistent with the schedules established per division.

Deadlines:

All time limits prescribed or allowed by rule of procedure, court order, statutes applicable to court proceedings or otherwise pertaining to court proceedings have been tolled from 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15. Accordingly, all such deadlines have been extended for a period of 41 calendar days.

Electronic Filing:

The electronic filing requirements of Rule 40 of the Virgin Islands Rules of Appellate Procedure have been suspended from 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, and will remain suspended until further orders of the Court. Filings will be accepted via secured lock box at the Supreme Court locations at 161B Crown Bay.
