SBDC Offers Internet, Phone and Fax Services to Disconnected Businesses The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for St. Thomas-St. John, located at Nisky Center, is offering assistance for St. Thomas and St. John businesses still experiencing power outages or loss of telephone and Internet connections. Affected businesses can take advantage of SBDC Internet access and local fax service. The service continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 and Friday, Sept. 3.

UVI Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament Set Sept. 3-5 UVI will host the 10th annual Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament from Sept. 3-5, at the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. UVI’s men’s volleyball team will compete along with club teams from the U.S. mainland, Puerto Rico, St. Martin, Anguilla, Antigua, Tortola, St. Croix and St. Thomas. Activities begin with a team reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3. Play resumes on Saturday and a championship match is slated for 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5. Admission is free.
UVI to Close for Labor Day; Library, Computer Lab Schedules Announced The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. While UVI’s libraries will also be closed on Sept. 6, they will be open on their regular schedules over the weekend – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 4, and 1-8 p.m. on Sept. 4.
UVI computer labs – the library 24/7 lab on St. Thomas and the Room 120 Lab in the North West Wing on St. Croix – will be available to students on Sept. 6. Students may also access online library resources at any time at http://library.uvi.edu. Also, the UVI Help Desk voice mail at ext.1466 and e-mail at helpdesk@uvi.edu will be monitored during the holiday.
UVI to Host Free Presentations of ‘The Scholarship Workshop’ Sept. 9-10 The University of the Virgin Islands will host free presentations of “The Scholarship Workshop” developed by motivational speaker and author Marianne Ragins. Sessions are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, on the St. Thomas campus, and Friday, Sept. 10, on the St. Croix campus. They are open to Virgin Islands high school and college students, and adults planning to return to college. Ragins, who won $400,000 in scholarships to finance her own studies at Florida A&M University and George Washington University, has developed The Scholarship Workshop based on two decades of experience as a workshop leader and motivational speaker. She has coached thousands of students in their efforts to obtain funds to pay for their college educations.
The workshop is a two-hour, interactive seminar designed to help students conduct a successful, step-by-step scholarship search. It will be offered in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and in the Great Hall of the North West Wing on the St. Croix campus.

UVI’s 12th Annual Fall Student Research Symposium – Call for Abstracts UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics and the Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) programs invite undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the 12th Annual UVI Fall Student Research Symposium. Students must register and submit their abstract at ecs.uvi.edu by Friday, Sept. 10, in order to participate.
The symposium is part of an effort to increase research training and promote excellence among UVI students. It provides an opportunity for students to display the results of their work from their summer research experiences and for the public to interact with them. Student presentations are evaluated by a panel of judges from the community for scientific content and clarity of presentation.
The Fall Research Symposium will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26, on the St. Thomas campus in the first-floor conference room of UVI’s Administration and Conference Center. Students will set up beginning at 11 a.m. Airfare may be provided for St. Croix students who have registered and submitted an abstract by Sept. 10. The registration fee is $30. Waivers are available. Each registered participant will receive a name badge, lunch, abstract booklet and presentation feedback. For details, contact Amanda Wright at 693-1397.
VI Writing Project Seeks Proposals for November Conference; Deadline Sept. 15 The Virgin Islands Writing Project invites the submission of proposals to be considered for presentation at its literacy conference scheduled for Nov. 1, on UVI’s St. Croix campus. The conference theme is “Inspiring Change and Empowering our Community through Literacy.” It will focus on embracing literacy to change negative impressions and empowering the community to participate in the process.
Presenters are encouraged to develop unique and creative proposals related to the theme. Proposals should model best practices, provide useful information that participants can use in their classes, showcase effective and innovative practices, support collaboration and inquiry, and be as applicable as possible to a wide range of academic institution types.
Proposals must be received by Sept. 15. Proposals must be submitted through the online submission form. The primary contact on the proposal will be notified if the proposal has been accepted for presentation by Monday, Sept. 20. August Issue of Dateline: UVI Covers Arrival of Class of 2014 The August issue of the monthly newsletter Dateline: UVI has been published and disseminated among university offices. It is also available from the Public Relations section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu. The August issue focuses on the arrival and orientation of the UVI Class of 2014. It also features stories on the recent breakfast honoring St. Thomas-St. John alumni and a meeting of UVI supporters in the Washington, D.C. area.
St. Thomas Campus Health Services Center Announces Office Hours The UVI Health Services Center on the St. Thomas campus has announced the following office hours for the fall semester. The center will be open as follows:
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Tuesdays and Thursdays
The new physician’s office hours will be:
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Mondays
Noon to 2 p.m. – Wednesdays

Dr. Audria Thomas Named St. Thomas Campus Physician Dr. Audria Thomas has joined the staff of UVI’s St. Thomas campus Health Services department as the campus physician. Dr. Thomas received her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., in 1980. She also obtained a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland-College Park. She is licensed to practice medicine in the Virgin Islands and presently conducts her own private practice in allergy and immunology, pediatric and adult care. The physician’s office hours are 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays and from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Toni Gillman Appointed Evening Nurse for St. Thomas Campus Toni Gillman has been appointed to serve as the evening nurse on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Gillman is a registered professional nurse licensed to work in the Virgin Islands. She worked at the Schneider Regional Medical Center as a staff nurse in the medical/surgical, endoscopy and recovery room units until 2008. She now operates as a sacred sound healing therapist, where she blends her education and practice as a registered professional nurse with over 35 years experience with formal training. The Health Services Office maintains evening hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
St. Croix Student Government Association Seeking Candidates The elections committee of Student Government Association on UVI’s St. Croix campus will conduct the 2010-2011 freshman and special elections, at the Evans Center Library Terrace (700 Level) from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The committee seeks students for various leadership roles including junior, sophomore and freshman senators.
Applications and election petitions are available in the Office of Student Activities. A mandatory meeting for candidates is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, in Evans Center Room 716. A Meet-the-Candidates Forum is scheduled noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 13. It will be held in the UVI Cafetorium. St. Thomas Office of Upward Bound Closed Until Sept. 13 The Upward Bound Office on UVI’s St. Thomas campus will be closed for vacation. The office will reopen on Monday, Sept. 13.
Seventh Annual Voices That Count Forum Set for October on St. Croix, St. Thomas The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) will host the 7th annual Voices That Count policy forum on Oct. 4 and 5 on St. Croix and on Oct. 7 and 8 on St. Thomas.
The forum – titled “Turn Voices Into Votes” – brings together individuals with disabilities, service providers, advocates and Virgin Islanders who are running for public office. They will discuss issues that affect people with disabilities and work to promote systemic change. First-day morning sessions will focus on formulating questions to ask legislators. Afternoon sessions will consist of a forum for the Virgin Islands Delegate to Congress and gubernatorial candidates. On the second day, candidates for the Virgin Islands Legislature will have an opportunity to answer questions developed by the disability community. There will be four focus areas: education-transition, employment, ADA accessibility and visit-ability.
The forum will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. On St. Croix, it will take place on the UVI campus in the Great Hall of the North West Wing building. On St. Thomas, the forum will be held at the Windward Passage Hotel.

Reichhold Unveils Exciting Line-up for 2010-2011 Season From ballet to reggae and Chaka Kahn to Michael Bolton, UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts’ 2010-2011 season will feature something for everyone. Performances by Rhythmic Circus will open the Center’s Family Series with shows on Oct. 8 on St. Croix and Oct. 9 on St. Thomas.
The regular season opens Oct. 23, with the platinum selling recording artist Chaka Kahn taking the stage. Virgin Islands native Dion Parson returns home for a Nov. 27 concert featuring his youth mentoring project – the 21st Century Band. Singer, songwriter Michael Bolton follows under the Reichhold spotlight on Jan. 29. Urban rhythm and hip hop moves, drumming and dancing will be provided by Street Beat in Family Series offering on Feb. 19. The next show will feature Reggae old school – Jimmy Cliff – and new school breakout solo artist Gramps Morgan. South African natives Hugh Masekela and vocalist Lira bring world music to the V.I. with performances March 18, on St. Croix and March 19, on St. Thomas. Contemporary ballet with a European twist will close out the Reichhold season when the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet performs on May 21.
