Governor John P. deJongh Jr. today extended his congratulations to public school teachers Shabre Providence and Diana Tyson as District Teachers of the Year and to Ms. Providence who has been selected as the State Teacher of the Year.
Providence is a fourth grade teacher at Ricardo Richards Elementary School on St. Croix, and Tyson teaches at Lockhart Elementary School. “I am pleased to congratulate both Ms. Providence and Ms. Tyson on their being selected as district teachers of the year. I also congratulate Ms. Providence on being selected as the State Teacher of the Year. I commend them both on their achievements and thank them for all they do each day for the children that they are tasked with educating,” deJongh said today.
Both district teachers of the year were considered for the state award by an evaluation committee made up of Department of Education officials and representatives from other entities that included the V.I. Board of Education and the University of the Virgin Islands.
Providence will represent the territory at the National State Teacher of the Year Competition, which is run by the Council of Chief State School Officers. Winners of the competition participate in a number of activities, beginning early next year with the National State Teacher of the Year Conference.
DeJongh added that, as is customary, both district teachers of the year will be profiled and formally commended when he delivers his eighth State of the Territory Address in January 2014.
