Tropical Wave Bringing Wet, Gusty Weather Thursday Night

A strong tropical wave bearing down on the Virgin Islands could become a tropical depression right over the area, meteorologist Felix Castro at the National Weather Service in San Juan,l said at 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Conditions are conducive for development.

“Conditions will start deteriorating tonight,” he said, putting the time frame for the weather to start going downhill at around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Residents should expect up to four to six inches of rain in some locations and winds gusting 30 to 35 mph, he said.

Felix said the Hurricane Hunter aircraft are scheduled to fly into the storm later Thursday to determine if the weather system is already a tropical depression.

Lousy weather will continue through Friday, but Felix said conditions should improve on Saturday.

He said Thursday’s morning’s rain was just the normal tropical showers.

Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30, with the peak coming in mid-September.
