V.I. Falls to Puerto Rico in Finals

The Virgin Islands Major Little League team lost to Puerto Rico, 14-3, Friday in the championship game of the 2014 Latin American Regional Major Little League tournament in Freeport, Bahamas.

Alexander McFarlane did it the first time but could not hold down the Puerto Ricans twice, giving up two two-run home runs to Puerto Rico in the first inning. The Puerto Ricans scored five runs in the first inning and 10 runs of McFarlane in three and one-third innings.

V.I. scored two runs in the second inning, with Moises Venezuela and Julio Illedge both crossing the plate to close the deficit to three runs. The Puerto Ricans scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning, the V.I. only scored one more run in the game, which came in the top of the third inning.

The Puerto Rican then scored three runs in the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam from Abimail Torres, which ended the game due to the ten run mercy rule.

The V.I. had seven hits in the game and committed three errors. The Puerto Ricans had 10 hit and were errorless. The V.I. was led by McFarlane, who had two hits in three at bats. The Puerto Rican were led by Jodil Santana who had three hits in four at bats and Emanuel Alicia who had two hits in two at bats.

By winning the Caribbean Regional tournament, Puerto Rico advances to Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
