Suspect Tries to Sell Stolen Jewelry Back to Victim

Edward Richards, 29, was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession of stolen property after a woman reported that her purse had been stolen and that the suspect had attempted to sell her property back to her.

Police on St. John also arrested Mariano Amaro, 40, and charged him with possession of stolen property.

According to police reports, the 54-year-old female victim left her car in Cruz Bay Tuesday morning with her purse in the car and the doors unlocked. When she returned to her car a few minutes later she realized that someone had stolen her purse, which contained jewelry, cash and other personal items.

At about 11:30 the same day a man, later identified as Edward Richards of Power Boyd in Chocolate Hole, tried to sell the woman stolen items, which she recognized as hers. The victim alerted police and the suspect was arrested.

Further police investigation revealed that Richards sold some of the stolen jewelry to another person, later identified as Mariano Amaro of Estate Enighed.

Amaro was found and arrested by St. John police about an hour later.

Bail for both suspects was set at $10,000 each and they were remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
