The Dominicanos softball team of St. Thomas came to St. Croix over the weekend and took home the championship trophy after beating Puerto Rico 15-11 at the Estate Profit Ball Park in front of a raucous pro-Dominicanos crowd.

St. Croix Central High School wrapped up its Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon with the Host Caribs taking the boys championship from John Woodson Junior high 46-36, and Bertha C. Boschulte of St. Thomas taking the Girls championship over the host lady Caribs in a 33-30 barn burner.

On Friday night, the St. Croix Central High School gymnasium was officially renamed the Ronald Alexander “RonChe” Charles Arena in honor of arguably the greatest high school basketball player the U.S. Virgin Islands have ever seen.

Racing fans at the Randall “Doc” James race track Sunday were stunned when local fan favorite Carse was defeated by St. Thomas’s Questionable Sky by a half-length in the seven-furlong feature “V.I. Agriculture Fair Classic.”

Ninety-two tennis players from the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and several U.S. Mainland states will kick-off competition Friday in the 4th Annual Chrysler Cup Tennis Tournament, to be held Feb. 12 to 15.

The 2010 Scotiabank International Optimist Regatta is celebrating its 18th year, marking nearly two decades of promoting junior sailing in the Caribbean. The St. Thomas Yacht Club and Virgin Island Sailing Association-hosted and Caribbean Sailing Association-sanctioned regatta is set to sail June 17-20.  

The Virgin Islands Tennis Association will hold tryouts for the 2010 V.I. National Tennis Teams from Dec. 26 through 31.

Tennessee senior center Wayne Chism exploded late in the second half Sunday to help the Volunteers hold on for a 57-53 win over DePaul as the Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament continued. The final games will be played Monday.
