HOWS, WHENS AND WHERES OF ANTARCTICA

HOW:
The only practical way to visit Antarctica is by cruise ship.
Check with your travel agent. The agency used by Friends of the National Zoo was Vantage Travel. Toll Free — 1-888-734-0188. They know Antarctic Travel and have an experienced escort staff.
The Orient Lines' Marco Polo is an excellent ship for this region, plus service and food were outstanding.
There are many other ships, mostly much smaller, none in the traditional cruise category. Some more scientific minded.
WHEN:
The Antarctic summer tourist season runs from mid-November to mid-March. This isn't high season, this is the only season.
WHERE:
Ships leave from Ushuaia, Argentina; Punto Arenas, Chile; Port Stanley, the Falklands; Auckland, New Zealand.
Most visit the Antarctic Peninsula and the nearby islands. Penguins abound there and much other bird life. With luck you'll also see whales, dolphins and orcas. Some itineraries include South Georgia Island, where you'll see thousands of fur seals.
For ground tours in Ushuaia and other parts of Tierra del Fuego, try the agency we used — Turismo de Campo, Tel: (54-2901)437329 or 437351, Fax: (54-2901)432419. Maria Silvia de Boutellier is the boss but, if you need a guide-driver, ask for Esteban Daniels.
