ARTS BRIEFS

Here are some upcoming dates of interest to art and music appreciators. . .
* Recent oils by St. Thomas artist Aphrodite will go on exhibit Friday, March 12, at The Color of Joy in Red Hook. The exhibit, which will hang for a month, opens with a meet-the-artist reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. There'll be complimentary champagne and keyboard and vocal music by Sally Smith on the American Yacht Harbor deck outside the gallery.
* Next Monday is the deadline for visual artists to enter the 11th annual Caribbean Colour competition presented by the St. Thomas-St. John Arts Council. This year's exhibition will take place in the new Coral World, opening on March 21 and hanging through April 18.
Artists get to self-select one work in as many categories as they choose to enter — painting, watercolor, sculpture, printmaking, pastel, drawing, mixed and other media, and folk art and craft (with certain restrictions). A panel of judges will award prizes in each category. The entry fee is $25 per piece, and exhibitors must be or become Arts Council members. There is a separate fee schedule and separate judging for students.
An innovation this year is that exhibitors are being asked to paint a fabric swatch that will be incorporated with those of all other participants in creating a quilt to be auctioned at the opening reception. To have an entry form faxed, or to learn more, call Caribbean Colour chair Mary Blazine at 693-7765.
* Next Wednesday is the deadline for students to enter the 10th annual Arts Alive-Vitelco Classical Music Competition. A total of $5,000 in prize money is up for grabs in beginning, intermediate and advanced categories of vocal, piano and instrumental music.
Preliminary rounds will take place on St. Croix on March 22 and on St. Thomas on March 24, with the finals set for March 28 on St. Croix. There's no registration fee. To request an application form or learn more, call 775-1929.
