VANGUARDS WIN 3RD STRAIGHT QUIZ BOWL

The defending champion All Saints Vanguards stopped a surging Antilles School Brainstorms team to win the 1999 Academic Quiz Bowl title for a third consecutive year. Antilles was on a roll on the final day, including handing All Saints their first loss of the 1999 Quiz Bowl. The determined Vanguards, coached by Jose Carillo, and led by team captain Tremain Wheatley, went ahead for good from a tie in the final ten minutes of the last game.
Antilles Brainstorms captain Joe Davis said it was hard to come back after losing the first game. Antilles coach Alan Eberhart was proud of his team, which played more than four straight hours to get into the finals.
"They were gracious as always," said Eberhart.
Country Day School and St. Joseph's also played on the final day, but fell to the two powerhouse teams of the Quiz Bowl competition.
The All Saints team will attend the national competition in June, in either Washington, D.C. or New Orleans, La.
The Quiz Bowl, in its 21st year, is sponsored in part by the St. Thomas-St. John Federation of Teachers.
