SINBAD SAYS FESTIVAL ON TRACK

Sinbad Soul Music Festival Productions claimed Sunday that 76 percent of the hotel rooms allotted to the production company to sell to festival goers have been sold.
The Sinbad release voiced concern about "reports in the press regarding misconceptions and misunderstandings about the progress and promotion of the festival." The release didn't say exactly what press reports it referred to.
The production company that represents comedian and promoter Sinbad called upon the St. Thomas-St. John Hotel and Tourism Association to pull together to make the event a success.
The release from the company's California office further said that all three airlines serving the territory, American, Delta and US Airways, are completely sold out for the dates of the festival. And, according to the release, 73 percent of the charter seats allotted for the festival are booked.
The statement cautioned, "There is no time for unsubstantiated accusations and political posturing given the workload ahead of us."
The confusion may have resulted from media reports that a deadline of April 15, set for deposits from the tour operators to be received, came and went without deposits being laid down on local hotel rooms.
There has also been public criticism about the lack of advertising and marketing for the event — advertising and marketing that the V.I. government put up $500,000 to support.
Sinbad's representatives say that promotion is coming.
"Traditionally, near the end of April most of the marketplace believes we are sold out, even though packages are still available," the statement said. "So, every year we've had to introduce new information, cut new promos, as well as offer other incentives to stimulate sales."
The statement, dated April 26, said those efforts would begin this week.
