CHRISTIANSEN: CLOSE VIEQUES BOMBING RANGE

Delegate Donna Christian-Christiansen said she supports Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Rosello's position on closing the U.S. Navy bombing range on Vieques.
"The residents of Vieques and the Virgin Islands have for years been suffering from military exercises on Vieques. In light of the growing tensions on our neighboring islands arising primarily from the recent firing of uranium-tipped shells, as well as the accidental death of a guard at the live firing range, I believe that it is best for the Navy to leave," Christiansen said in a release from her office Thursday.
Christensen previously wrote to President Clinton about her concern for possible health and environmental risks to the U.S. Virgin Islands as a result of recent bombings.
"I hope that the President and Naval officials will honor Governor Rosello's request for the sake of the residents of these U.S. islands."
