St. Thomas-St. John Hotel & Tourism Association Sponsors "Enabling Travelers Seminar"
The St. Thomas-St. John Hotel & Tourism Association will sponsor "The Enabling Travelers Seminar" this month at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Club & Resort on St. Thomas. Members of the hotel association can register to attend this free workshop designed to provide insightful training for hotel and restaurant staffs about how to interact with disabled guests and provide a comfortable atmosphere. Early registration is recommended because space is limited. The workshop will be conducted during the second week of September. Rik Blyth, general manager of Wyndham Sugar Bay and member of the hotel association board, helped to organize this workshop as a benefit to the St. Thomas-St. John Hotel Association's members. St. Croix Merchants to Go Global
YARU Web Enterprises, a St. Croix-based Internet site construction company, recently announced the upcoming launch of the Web site at www.shopstcroix.com. The site will showcase local merchandise, making it available to the estimated 100 million Internet shoppers all over the world. Customers will be able to browse the site, view actual digital photographs of the merchandise and place orders via a secured credit card transaction. YARU created the Web site as a vehicle for local merchants to expose their merchandise to the global Internet community. Arts Alive Holiday Arts & Crafts Festival Scheduled for November
The Arts Alive Holiday Arts & Crafts Festival in Tillett Gardens on St. Thomas is scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, November 26-28. The festival is open to all artists and craftspeople who want to exhibit and sell products they have produced. Applications are available at the Tillett Art Gallery in Tillett Gardens. More Than 1,000 Travel Agents Benefit from Travel Seminars and Programs in USVI
Seven hundred and fifty travel agents have completed the Travel Weekly Seminars in Print Series sponsored by the Department of Tourism and 10 USVI hotels. The St. Thomas-St. John Hotel & Tourism Association will direct-mail a flyer about the "Picture Yourself in Paradise" summer promotion to each of these agents along with a congratulatory letter. A second direct mailing is also scheduled for late fall. Plans are underway to host four weekend familiarization visits for the agents who have completed the program. More than 300 travel agents are already booked for the August Travel Agent Month program. Each agent visiting during August will receive a package including information on the "Picture Yourself in Paradise" promotion, a "What To Do St. Thomas-St. John" booklet, a shopping shuttle certificate and a coupon savings book developed by the
St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce.
New Business Web Site Launches in Territory
HR Consulting Services recently launched "Doing Business in the Virgin Islands," the new business Web site dedicated entirely to news and information on careers and business in the Virgin Islands. The new site is focused primarily on transmitting business and employment information in the United States Virgin Islands. The goal of the Internet site is to develop a useful online resource where people interested in doing business in the USVI can advertise their products and services. Individuals can also access up-to-date information about business opportunities, tax incentives, economic development, available resources, office space, employment opportunities, links to other Web sites and more. Businesses and organization spokespersons, marketing directors, government agencies and PR personnel are invited to participate by sending press releases, news commentary, advertisements, announcements, copies of speeches, schedules, survey results, pictures and other business-related information. Schnitzel Haus Opens on St. Thomas
Vacationers and islanders can now experience German cuisine at the newly opened restaurant Schnitzel Haus on St. Thomas. The restaurant specializes in veal dishes and other German cuisine. Dishes range from Weiner Schnitzel, lightly breaded veal served with lemon wedges, to Jager Schnitzel, breaded veal topped with bacon, onions and mushrooms. All entrees are served with Bratkartoffeln or egg noodles and red cabbage or "veggies de Jour." Appetizers include stuffed mushrooms and homemade soups. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. for happy hour and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner. For more information about Schnitzel Haus, call (340) 775-9896.
Duffy's Love Shack to Open on St. John
Plans are underway to open a Duffy's Love Shack on St. John. Tim and Liz Duffy, owners of Duffy's Love Shacks, plan to open a similar restaurant with the same name in December at the current site of the Back Yard Restaurant. The concept of the new St. John restaurant is the "Ultimate Tropical Theme Park for Adults," the formula used at the successful Duffy's on St. Thomas and in Ocean City, Maryland. A thatched-roof bar will serve as Duffy's centerpiece. Drinks will come with favors such as sharks and toy skeletons. For more information, call (340) 775-4122.
Sinbad's Soul Music Festival Available on Pay-Per-View
Vacationers and islanders who missed the successful "Kmart Presents* Sinbad's Soul Music Festival" on St. Thomas have another opportunity to experience the entertainment, music and fun. "Kmart Presents*Sinbad's Soul Music Festival Part 5" makes its debut as a pay-per-view television special at 9 p.m. (EST), August 20, 1999. The special includes performances and appearances by Smokey Robinson, Chaka Khan, The Stylistics, Roy Ayers, DeBarge with El DeBarge, the SOS Band, the Gap Band, Morris Day and the Time and, of course, Sinbad himself. The special will also air at 12:00 a.m. (EST) on Viewer's Choice (Hot Choice), DirecTV, TVN and EchoStar. "Encore" broadcasts will air in September on Viewer's Choice 2, DirecTV, TVN and other local cable systems nationwide.
