GIVE US A BREAK! AND A TICKET!

Dear Editor:
A recent statement by the acting police commissioner, in light of three recent speed-related traffic fatalities, is way off the mark: Police officers, when seeing a driver exceeding the posted speed limit, will "flash their emergency lights" to alert the drivers to their speeding.
Why not pull them over and ticket them? Do we not have a point system in effect to eliminate repeat offenders from the roadways? If mandatory car insurance goes into effect, the bad drivers will be assessed accordingly or may be uninsurable, making our roads even safer.
Are there any records as to the number of speeding tickets written over the past week, month, year? Have any speeding tickets ever been written? I don't know anyone, in the 18 years I have lived here, who has received a speeding ticket, but I am run off the highway every day by idiots who overtake me on hills and curves, and who fail to stop at posted stop signs.
Has anyone ever noticed a driver weaving and unable to negotiate curves, especially late at night? How many citations are written for drunken driving, except when an accident is involved?
Instead of spending their working hours notifying next of kin and writing long accident reports, why not have the officers on duty patrol the streets and issue tickets? Prevention is worth a pound of cure.
