HOTEL ASSOCIATION HOSTING ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM

April 20, 2001 — More than 50 hoteliers, along with tour operators, airline representatives, and advertising and public relations people, are taking part in the St. Thomas-St. John Hotel and Tourism Association's 8th annual Destination Symposium, which opens Saturday at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.
"This will be the largest conference ever," Richard Doumeng, association president, said. "Collectively, these companies delivered more than $100 million in business to the Virgin Islands in 2000."
The participants will spend two days in discussions and marketing strategy workshops, but will take time out for day sails and a dinner on St. John, as well as the Governor's Dinner Saturday night in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Grand Ballroom, sponsored by Conde Nast Traveler.
The dinner is a fund-raiser for the association's Alton Adams Scholarship fund. Doumeng said guests are being asked to contribute $100. This year he hopes to raise $10,000 to provide scholarships at the University of the Virgin Islands for V.I. students studying hotel and restaurant management.
The symposium runs through Tuesday.
