48 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS PICKED UP ON ST. JOHN

April 24, 2001 – Forty–eight illegal Chinese immigrants are in federal custody after their illegal entry into St. John over the weekend.
In what some say is the largest roundup of undocumented Chinese nationals on St. John, the illegals were picked up near Coral Bay and transported by federal and local authorities to the Leander Jurgen Command in Cruz Bay before being handed over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for processing, according to police officials.
An increasing number of undocumented Chinese nationals has been landing in the Virgin Islands since the mid 1990s. The number of incidents on St. John has increased in recent months.
