ASSAULT BY DRIVER OF 'TAXI VAN' REPORTED

May 3, 2001 – Police on St. Thomas were investigating the case Thursday of a woman who reported being abducted in Estate Peterborg and assaulted the day before. According to a release from the Police Department, the assailant was driving "a green taxi van with a gray interior."
According to the release, the victim told police she got into the vehicle on Peterborg Road around 1 p.m. Wednesday to travel to Charlotte Amalie. Instead, she said, the driver went to a location she did not recognize and attacked her. She said she was able to escape from the van and hid until the man stopped looking for her and drove off.
The woman was treated at Roy L. Schneider Hospital for multiple bruises, police said.
The release said the assailant was described as a black man of medium build who had short hair, sideburns and a mustache and spoke with a West Indian accent.
Anyone with information regarding the matter is asked to telephone the police at 774-2211 or emergency number 911.
