CALLWOOD GETS RULES OK FOR PUBLIC WORKS

May 4, 2001 – The Senate Rules Committee gave its stamp of approval to Wayne Callwood, Gov. Charles Turnbull's nominee for commission of Public Works, Thursday night, after using his confirmation hearing as an opportunity to delve into a controversial contract for a water production barge.
The barge contract had been the subject of a full-day confirmation hearing April 4, and the subject took up more than six hours again Thursday. Senators accepted that Callwood's role in the controversy was limited and spent most of their time grilling other administration officials. Rules Chair Carlton Dowe kept the questioning centered on the barge contract until the end of the day, then opened discussion to general questions about the Public Works Department.
Callwood answered questions about sewage treatment, road repairs, traffic lights, roadside clean-up, staffing and transportation. Several senators voiced concerns that Callwood is not in control of the department but that it is being micro-managed from Government House.
However, the committee voted 5-1 to approve the nomination. Sen. Adelbert Bryan was the only member to oppose it. Voting in favor were Sens. Donald "Ducks" Cole, Almando "Rocky" Liburd, Norma Pickard-Samuel, Celestino White and Dowe. Sen. Alicia "Chucky" Hansen was absent.
Several senators not on the Rules Committee have indicated they will vote to confirm Callwood when the nomination reaches the Legislature floor.
