CHARGES CONTEMPLATED IN FERRY MISHAP

May 11, 2001 — The United States Coast Guard regional office in Miami, Fla., will decide whether charges are to be filed in connection with the ferry boat accident outside Cruz Bay Harbor in March.
The accident injured about 40 people and caused thousands of dollars in damage to the passenger ferry Caribe Tide and the car barge Roanoke, which formerly operated in the territory as Tuglife.
The final report on the accident was due the first week in May, but the Coast Guard’s commanding officer on St. Thomas said this week he is reviewing the courses of action he can take.
The ferry and the barge collided just outside the Cruz Bay harbor channel markers around 7 p.m. on March 9, sending some of the injured to St. John’s Myrah Keating Smith Clinic and others to the Roy L. Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas for treatment. The Coast Guard has grounded both vessels pending repairs and re-certification.
