MOTHER'S DAY FUN RUN IS A FAST ONE

May 14, 2001 – The Mother's Day 2-Mile Fun Run, directed by the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners at Magens Bay on Sunday, attracted a record 32 runners. As the course consisted of laps on the flat beach road, the front runners produced some fast times.
The first male finisher, just back from the Music City Marathon in Nashville, was Antilles School teacher Michael Flaherty, with a time of 12:03. Close behind him was fellow teacher and Tennessee marathon participant Isaac Aronson, whose time was 12:25. Finishing third for the men was Vincent Nunes, who frequently places in the top of the S.T.A.R. races, with a time of 12:39.
First place for the women went to Billie Hodges, who can often be seen blazing up and down Peterborg Road in the early mornings, with a time of 13:45. The second woman over the finish line was Betsey Corvene, at 14:17. In third place, with a time of 14:40, was Charlotte Morris, who recently competed in the St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon.
There was a photo-finish tie for last place overall, as Kirk Grybowski sprinted for the finish line neck and neck with Kathy McCarthy. They both crossed it with times of 28:36.
The Next S.T.A.R. race is the Father's Day 2-Mile Fun Run in Frenchtown, set to begin at 7 a.m. on June 17.
