V.I. PERSONNEL GROUP JOINS NEIGHBORS

May 20, 2001 – The Virgin Islands Human Resource Management Association recently became the 16th member of the Caribbean Employers' Confederation.
At an annual meeting early this month in Martinique, the CEC accepted the Virgin Islands group. Attorney Charles E. Engeman represented the V.I. Human Resource Management Association at the meeting. He is the managing shareholder of the Caribbean office of Ogletree Deakins, a national labor and employment law firm.
The CEC was founded in 1960. Its stated mission is to advance the interests of its members in the development of sound human resource and industrial relations practices and in the preparation for the integration into the global economy and to manage the process of hemispheric integration and development of social dialogue.
Represented at the conference were member delegations from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda and Martinique. The other three membesr, St. Lucia, Guyana and the Cayman Islands were absent.
Also attending were accredited observers from the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises, the International Organization of Employers, the International Labour Organization and the CARICOM secretariat.
Topics discussed included the recent "blacklisting" of several Caribbean states as regards their offshore financial sectors and the impact of IIV/AIDS on the workforce.
