CAUSE OF FIRE BEING INVESTIGATED

May 22, 2001 – An investigation continues into the cause of a fire early Tuesday morning in Estate Fortuna, according to VI Fire Service Fire Marshal Glenn "Milo" Francis.
The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. causing extensive damage to the upper part of a dwelling, according to Francis. The sole occupant, an elderly woman, got out of the burning building unharmed. "The first unit to arrive on the scene found her outside of the house," Francis said.
The building was part wood and part masonry.
Fire Chief Merwin Potter said the response of the agency was good. "We got the first units on the scene from downtown in about 12 minutes and had the fire completely under control within 45 minutes."
The lack of any fire services either in Fortuna or on the North Side of St. Thomas has been cause for concern in both communities.
