GOVERNOR TO SPEAK ON LIFE OF J. ANTONIO JARVIS

Nov. 26, 2001 – As part of the Virgin Islands' celebration of the centenary of J. Antonio Jarvis's birth, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull will deliver the first in a series of lectures on the life and times of the writer, historian, educator and publisher, Friday at 6 p.m. at the V.I. Cultural Heritage Institute.
Jarvis was a Renaissance man. His writings spanned Virgin Islands history and society, poetry and drama. He was a gallery owner whose paintings are in collections in the Caribbean, Europe and the United States. He and Ariel Melchior Sr. founded the Virgin Islands Daily News. He taught at several local schools and was for 20 years the principal of the Abraham Lincoln School, which was later renamed in his honor.
The institute's series of lectures marking the 100th anniversary of Jarvis' birth also will include presentations on his life and accomplishments by writers and family members.
"We are honored to have as the first presenter the governor of the Virgin Islands," a release from the institute states. "Gov. Turnbull is an eminent historian, and he had the privilege of knowing Mr. Jarvis for many years. It will be a fascinating lecture."
All of the lectures are open to the public and free. The institute is located at 5-6 Kongens Gade, the "Education Street" extension of the bottom of Government Hill. For additional information, call 774-9537.
