MAKING WAVES: WHAT'S THERE TO LISTEN TO

Nov. 29, 2001 – Here is some of the locally produced and hosted special-interest radio programing coming up. This is a free listing feature, updated on an ongoing basis. For details, see the editor's note below.
WIUJ Radio (non-commercial station) – 102.9 FM, St. Thomas
"Sunday Classics with Charlene," Sunday, Dec. 2, noon-1 p.m. — Charlene has an oldie but goodie: a performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.3 in D Minor, Op.30, that was recorded in 1961 but continues to sparkle 40 years later. Byron Janis is the pianist; Antal Dorati conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.
(Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote "the Third" to impress New Yorkers on his first U.S. concert tour in 1909. He didn't have time to rehearse it before leaving Russia for America, where he would later emigrate; so, he practiced on a silent keyboard on the steamship voyage across the Atlantic. The two great Vladimirs, Horowitz and Ashkenazy, recorded "the Third" four times each, and Janis made a second recording, with the Boston Symphony. The composer sanctioned four cuts to be made in performances and took them in his own recording, presumably to fit the work onto the 78 rpm records of the day. It was a common practice then; nowadays, recordings with cuts are rare.)
"The Doug Lewis Show," Sunday, Dec. 2, 1-3 p.m. — Doug will feature some solo and Beatles music of George Harrison, who died on Thursday; he'll also mark the birthdays of Tom McGuiness of Manfred Mann and the late Roebuck "Pops" Staples of the Staple Singers and check in with some artists who have performed live on this date, including Steve Earle, Tom Russell, Buddy and Julie Miller, Lucinda Williams, the Holmes Brothers and Geoff Muldaur. The day's giveways: a two-CD set on the best-of-blues Alligator label and a Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band sampler.
