Dec. 8, 2001 – The St. Croix Landmarks Society is hosting a "Ruins Ramble" to explore Estate Fountain Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3:30 p.m.
Estate Fountain was one of 53 estates damaged during the labor riots of the 1878 "Fireburn." Discontented plantation laborers congregated in Frederiksted, to seek new jobs on the only day of the year they could do so, to emigrate, to enjoy themselves.
But the holiday mood of the crowd turned violent, police intervened, martial law was declared, soldiers were sent from St. Thomas, and the scene escalated into several days of violence across the island, with fire and sticks as weapons. Termed a "holocaust" by author Florence Lewisohn, the days of violence are chronicled in her book, "St. Croix under Seven Flags."
The hike is an opportunity to roam the landscape and imagine the story of its past. Historian George Tyson will be along to link the site with its history.
Interested persons should meet at the upper parking lot at Carambola Golf Club. Cost is $8, with a student special rate of $6. Wine and cheese will be served after the hike.
