COL. RENALDO RIVERA RETIRING WITH 30+ YEARS

Feb. 14, 2002 – Col. Renaldo Rivera is retiring with more than 30 years of military service at 3 p.m. Friday at Jackson Armory on St. Croix.
Rivera is a Vietnam combat veteran who has served with honor and distinction in the V.I. National Guard for 22 years, according to a Guard release. He holds a bachelor's degree in law enforcement administration from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. He completed several courses during his military education, graduating from the U.S. Army War College.
His military career began with his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1968. He served a one-year tour as an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam and attained the rank of sergeant. As a decorated Vietnam soldier, he was assigned to an infantry battalion at Fort Ord, Calif., to train troops for deployment in Vietnam.
Service within the V.I. National Guard
Rivera has held a wide variety of command and staff positions. He was direct commissioned a first lieutenant in 1980 within the V.I. National Guard. Upon joining the V.I. Guard, he was assigned as a platoon leader in the 661st MP Company. Next he became company commander, 662d MP Company. During this time, he joined the full-time work force as program analyst and was thereafter reassigned as training officer, 666 MP Battalion.
In 1986 he was reassigned as mobilization planner and continued to perform that assignment until 1989 when he assumed the duties of mobilization and readiness officer. During the 1990s he held positions at the helm of the 786th S & S Battalion; as commander, Troop Command; training officer; and as plans, operations and military support officer.
In 1997 Rivera was named deputy chief of staff, operations, and his tour ended as deputy chief of staff, logistics. Both directorships are within the Territorial Area Command on St. Croix.
Awards
Rivera received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star Medal with V device, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal with a Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, V.I. Meritorious Service Medal, V.I. Commendation Medal, V.I. Long and Faithful Service Medal, V.I. Emergency Service Ribbon and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He is married to the former Diane E. Walcott of St. Croix. They have three daughters and one son: Krystal Cartier, Chantal Jenae Simone, Kiahn Michael, and Lanique Rinae.
