March 18, 2002 – The UVI Bulletin Board for March 18, 2002 notes these upcoming events:
Meet Barrington Levy Friday, March 22
The general public is invited to meet dancehall reggae star Barrington Levy at a special appearance on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the University of the Virgin Islands Little Theatre on the St. Thomas Campus. The event, sponsored by the Student Activities Office, is expected to include music, a question-and-answer session and a discussion by Levy of his experiences in the music world. Admission is free.
Attend Levy Concert and Win Trip to St. Lucia Jazz Festival
One lucky reggae fan attending the Saturday, March 23, Barrington Levy concert at the Reichhold Center for the Arts will win air tickets for two to attend the St. Lucia Jazz Festival set for May 3 to 12. The winner will be selected by a drawing of admission ticket stubs during the Barrington Levy concert.
A second-place prize of two tickets to STARfest 8, scheduled at the Reichhold on May 11-12 and 19-20, will also be given away.
General admission $35 tickets for the Levy concert and $15 student tickets are still available. The show starts at 8 p.m. and will also feature the STARlion Family. Call 693-1559 for tickets and contest details.
The St. Lucia Jazz Festival will feature Lauryn Hill, India.Arie, Branford Marsalis, Smokey Robinson and Stephanie Mills.
Free Tax Workshop Set March 26 on St. Croix
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service Family and Consumer Science Program will hold a free Tax Workshop on the St. Croix Campus on Tuesday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center. Internal Revenue Service agent Thomas Blake, Jr., will cover the following topics: exemptions, standard deductions, itemized deductions, tax credits and pensions. Call Dorothy Gibbs at 692-4089 to register.
Free Environmental Landscaping Workshop Set
The community is invited to attend a free workshop on environmental landscaping on March 21 at the UVI Marine Science Center. The second of two workshops, the session will feature UVI assistant professor of biology Dr. Gary Ray. His presentation is titled: "VI Native Plant Horticulture." Ray will cover basic plant propagation techniques, ways to borrow design ideas from the natural landscape, and the pros and cons of maintaining native plants vs. marketed exotics.
The workshop is sponsored by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service in partnership with the U.S. Agriculture Department's Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Program. For details or to register contact Toni Thomas at the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, at 693-1084.
