May 13, 2002 – The search is on for a doctor to head the Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic on St. Thomas. The previous head, Dr. Carlton Alexis, retired about two weeks ago after seven years on the job.
"Only candidates that fulfill all of our expectations in terms of academic background, ethics, credential and medial experience will be considered," said Dr. Rafael E. Ramirez, who heads the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Juan.
Medical Center spokeswoman Annie Moraza said a full-time physician on loan from the San Juan center filled in every day last week, and doctors on loan will do so until the post is filled.
Ramirez said V.I. veterans with medical conditions that require specialized or additional health care are sent to the Veterans Affairs hospital in San Juan for treatment.
Health care for Virgin Islands veterans is a high priority for Veterans Affairs, he said. The St. Thomas outpatient clinic is one of five under the medical center's umbrella. The others are on St. Croix and in Arecibo, Ponce and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Candidates for the position should call Ramirez at (787) 641-7582 or fax their resumes to (787) 641-4557.
