RUM FIRM'S GIFT TO UVI WILL BE MATCHED BY JOYNER

May 31, 2002 – The contributions just seem to keep rolling in to fund scholarships for University of the Virgin Islands students.
UVI has received a donation of $25,000 to support scholarships from V.I. Rum Industries, presented by the firm's president Donald C. Nelthropp to UVI president Orville Kean Thursday on St. Croix.
V.I. Rum Industries has made annual contributions to the university since 1987, now reaching a total donation of $385,000. "They have set a leadership example in corporate philanthropy," said UVI's director of annual giving Deborah Hamilton. "We are deeply appreciative of the loyal support."
In 2000, the firm endowed a $10,000 scholarship for UVI students with majors in business administration and the sciences to honor the late Knud Oliver Parris, who was employed at Cruzan Rum for more than 46 years.
In this month of the Tom Joyner Foundation's fundraising, the $25,000 contribution by V.I. Rum Industries Ltd. makes the university eligible to receive 50 cents for each dollar in matching funds from the Tom Joyner Foundation.
