V.I. CARIBBEAN BASKETBALL TOURNEY CONTINUES

July 1, 2002 – The Verne R. Callwood Sr. Caribbean Basketball Confederation 16th annual Senior Championships got off to an exciting start this weekend at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center. Nine games were played over the weekend, four on Saturday and five on Sunday.
The men's teams opened the tournament when the Bahamas defeated Aruba, 79-31, on Saturday. In the second game Jamaica beat the British Virgin Islands, 81-68.
The U.S. Virgin Islands teams then took the floor and both emerged victorious. The local women beat the Bahamas, 66-49. They were followed by the men who handily outscored St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 101-64.
Antigua-Barbuda handed the British Virgin Islands its second defeat of the tournament, 102-79. The Dominican Republic women then beat Barbados women, 77-66. The Dominican Republic men followed suit with a convincing victory over Aruba, 140-58, dropping Aruba to an 0-2 record.
The Bahamas women then rebounded from their loss to the USVI to beat Puerto Rico, 74-66. The Bahamas men then followed the pattern of the all the men's teams that played after their women's teams and defeated Barbados, 85-74.
The tournament continues until Thursday, when the top two men's teams of each division will play in a semifinal game on Friday for the right to go on to the championship on Saturday. The top four women's team will play in the semifinal also on Friday for the women's championship game on Saturday.
