BERLEY AND HARPER WIN ROAD RACE

July 4, 2002 – Barrymore Berley and Theresa Harper took top honors in the third annual Emancipation Run Free Mile road race.
Berley, the track coach at St.Croix Central High School, took the early lead over Kamal Russell on the flat course which ran along Veterans Drive and Strand Street in Frederiksted, and held it to the finish and first place with a time of 6 minutes 4 seconds.
Russell was second in 6:18 followed by Bila Aberra in 6:44 for third, Kamali White 7:46 for fourth and Ronald Russell, the president of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation, was fifth in 8:13. Harper was the first female and third overall in 6:35. The runners and the race that celebrate the emancipation of slaves in the Danish West Indies finished at Fort Frederik, the spot where this historic event took place in 1848.
