July 15, 2002 – Over the weekend, in an effort to keep tuition at All Saints Cathedral School as affordable as possible, students, alumni, teachers, staff, parents, and members of All Saints Episcopal Church and its Men's Club and vestry volunteered their time and muscle to get the school ready for the new school year.
The result was eight refurbished classrooms and an improved cafeteria — which also serves as the church parish hall.
There's more to do, though, and another work day will be held this Saturday. Any and all volunteers are welcome to join in.
To support the effort, the school raised nearly $10,000, in donations ranging from $2,500 to $25, from businesses, parents and church members. Several businesses made in-kind contributions.
The volunteer project was proposed by Dr. Ruth Watson and endorsed by Principal Louise S. Brady. Meetings of parents of current and former students led to a plan of action. Parent Carole Oriol agreed to serve as project manager, taking on the task of securing donations where possible and reduced costs otherwise for needed materials and professional services. Architect Bill Karr, engineers James Boschulte and Geoff Watson, and skilled craftsman Enrique Richards conducted a needs assessment room by room and outlined the tasks to be done and the materials needed.
On Saturday and Sunday, the work went fast as the volunteers conversed and made jokes. Some parents including Jean Forde, PTSA president, prepared meals for the workers.
Those able to come out on Saturday are asked to bring their own paint brushes, painting supplies and tools, if possible. Anyone wishing to volunteer is asked to let Carole Oriol know by e-mail.
