BYRD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE DUE

July 22, 2002 – Recently graduated students and parents are reminded by the V.I. Education Dept. that July 30, 2002, is the deadline for submitting applications for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Programs.
Five four-year awards will be made in the St. Thomas-St. John School District to graduates who have been accepted at a college or university and who will attend full time. Recent 2002 graduates are required to have a cumulative average of "C" or better. Students from public and private schools and students who have completed a GED program are eligible.
Graduates applying must also have demonstrated outstanding academic programs as well as the promise of continued academic achievement.
Each award provides a four-year scholarship of $1,500 per year. The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters upon submission of required evidence showing eligibility is maintained. Selection is made without regard to race, color, gender, national origin, age or disability, and special efforts are made to ensure that the opportunity is accessible to students from low-income and moderate-income families.
Applications are available in St. Thomas at the Office of the Commissioner of Education, Curriculum Center, in Anna's Retreat, and at the public high schools. Applicants are urged to act quickly, as completed forms must be submitted to the Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Technology at the Curriculum Center by Tuesday, July 30. More specific information is available from the office's acting district director at 776-2250, ext. 248.
