July 25, 2002 – Seaborne Airlines has a new president and chief executive officer and has made a number of other changes in its management structure.
Marcus T. Sessoms, who previously served as operations director, was promoted to the chief executive post. "The board is highly confident in Marc's leadership and management abilities and the team he has assembled in short order to accomplish our aggressive goals and objectives," Omer ErSelcuk, the company's chief marketing officer, said.
Sessoms has served as the unofficial leader of the Seaborne team for the past six months, ErSelcuk, a member of the airline's board, said. He added that Sessoms now is responsible for all key business areas including flight, base and maintenance operations as well as safety, training, finance, purchasing, administration, flight tours, and marketing.
Richard A. Jenson, temporary president and CEO for the last six months since Mauice Kurg stepped down as president in December, is returning to his position as chief financial officer. Kurg, who is one of the company's owners, continues to work behind the scenes and said he expects to become more actively involved with the operation again in the near future.
Kirk A. Vogler is the company's new financial controller. He has more than a decade of senior financial management in the manufacturing, entertainment and communications services industry and last worked for Anixter Inc. in Chicago.
John M. Wells is replacing Sessoms as operations director. He brings more than 23 years of aviation experience to Seaborne, including amphibious aircraft experience as owner of Pacific Seaplane and as chief pilot and director at Catalina Flying Boats and Airborne Fire Attack.
Seaborne also has a new chief pilot, Nikita Colon. He previously was chief pilot and director of operations at Four Star Air Cargo on St. Thomas and at San Juan Jet Charter. He is replacing Patrick Tuttle, who will concentrate on his own business, TNT Aviation, and work as a contract pilot for TAG Aviation.
Until now, "We never had a complete management team," ErSelcuk said. "We now have the depth of skills and knowledge necessary to concentrate on building a strong regional airline."
He said some of the positions were previously unfilled, with various managers filling in the gaps, and that the changes are the first of several strategic steps the company will take this year to "focus on strategy and growth."
ErSelcuk said customers should look for additional St. Thomas/San Juan flights this fall and that by late fall the company will have direct service between St. Croix and San Juan.
