July 28, 2002 – On Aug. 6, the territory's residents will take to parks and streets for the annual Virgin Islands Night Out Against Drugs, Crime and Violence.
"It's a good opportunity to show your solidarity against drugs, crime and violence," said Flemon Lewis, director of the Law Enforcement Planning Commission's Juvenile Justice Program. He said the events provide opportunities for families to socialize in an environment that is drug, crime and violence free. He's in the process of lining up speakers for all three islands.
On St. Thomas, the night will feature a rally at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark in Frenchtown, with activities from 6 p.m. until midnight. Lewis said expects the speakers to make their appearance at 7:30 p.m. There will be food, soft drinks, games for children and music by P'Your Passion.
On St. John, the event will be held in Cruz Bay Park from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition to food and soft drinks, Lewis said, there will be a dance contest, karaoke and giveaways such as pencils that tout the Night Out message. Speakers will address the group beginning at 7 p.m.
On St. Croix, two events are scheduled. One will begin with a march from an as yet undetermined location to the Ralph de Chabert Housing Community, where there will be music, games, food and speakers. These activities will run from 6 to 10 p.m. The other event is a rally at Grove Place, also from 6 to 10 p.m., with games, food and speakers.
In addition, Lewis said, two other Night Out events are being planned for later on St. Thomas. On Aug. 23, residents of the Bovoni area will hold theirs, he said, and several weeks after that, another event will be held in the Nazareth area. Details for both still are being worked out.
The nation, including the territory, is observing Aug. 1-10 as Night Out Week.
