ST. JOHN'S 4TH LOVE CITY TRIATHLON IS SEPT. 2

July 28, 2002 – Buff up your swimming skills, check your bicycles over and dust off your running shoes. The fourth annual Love City Triathlon is coming on Sept. 2, which gives you only a bit more than a month to get ready.
The event consists of a half-mile swim at the V.I. National Park pavilion at Big Maho Bay, a 14-mile bike ride from Maho Bay to Cruz Bay and then back to Coral Bay, and a four-mile run in Coral Bay. The event starts at 7 a.m. Organizer Louise DePuy expects about 50 people to participate.
Participants can do all three legs or form a relay team that splits up the three parts of the triathlon. Awards will be given in the male, female and relay divisions. An inter-island trophy goes to the team with the top three best times. However, the times must be split up among both men and women.
Last year, DePuy went home with the top prize in the women's division with a time of 1:50:46. Tortola resident Philippe Leroy won the men's division with a time of 1:40:39. The relay team of Tory Lane, Paul Fredsell and Hank Slodden, all from St. John, captured first place with a time of 1:51:46. St. John took the Inter-island Award.
DePuy expects her closest competition to come from fellow St. John resident Jude Woodcock and Theresa Harper of St. Croix. Both typically finish at or near the top in local triathlon competitions. Another contender to watch is St. Croix resident Sue Brown.
"But the girls from Puerto Rico are an unknown," DePuy said, noting that she expects a big contingent this year from Roosevelt Roads Naval Base.
As for the men, DePuy said that Leroy is not making the trip to St. John, but another Tortolan, Chris Ghiorse, who finished second last year, is "even faster than last year" and should do well. Other strong contenders are Jeff Miller from St. John and David Jones from St. Thomas, she said.
Registration is $25 until Aug. 26. It will be $35 from Aug. 27 through Sept. 1. There is no registration on the day of the event. The last chance to sign up will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the Maho Bay Camps Pavilion.
Registration forms may be picked up at Goodbodies in The Marketplace shopping center on St. John, at Going Seanile on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront on St. Thomas, and at Endurance Sports in the Sunny Isle Shopping Center on St. Croix.
Maho Bay Camps is offering a free stay to race participants the night before the event. For anyone wanting to make a weekend of it, extra nights run $37.50 for two people sleeping in an eco-tent. Reservations must be made in advance.
