Aug. 8, 2002 – The African Diaspora Youth Development Foundation will bestow its 2002 Carlos Cooks Achievement Award to an Outstanding Black Businessperson on two individuals — Dr. J. Fletcher Robinson and Jacqueline A. Dennis.
The honorees will receive the organization's 21st annual awards at a dinner on Aug. 18 at Walker's by the Sea in Lindbergh Bay on St. Thomas.
Robinson and Dennis "have contributed not only their professional expertise in their appointed fields, but have also shared their precious time as educators, mentors and role models in their commitment to better this community and its youth," a release from the organization stated. Both "have contributed to the well-being of the people of these islands for several decades," it added.
Robinson is a dermatologist. Dennis, chief executive of AVI General Contractors Inc., is the territory's only female general contractor; she also is a pilot and president of the V.I. Girl Scouts Council.
Both are alumni of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Dennis obtaining her master's degree in social work after graduating from the then-College of the Virgin Islands in 1979. Robinson received his medical degree in 1965.
The awards dinner and presentation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be music by Louis Taylor and drumming by The Echo People.
