Aug. 14, 2002 – The V.I. Humanities Council (VIHC) is pleased to announce the launching of its new website, www.vihumanities.org.
The Council offers the people of the Virgin Islands opportunities to participate in humanities activities that promote a love of learning, enhance understanding, broaden thinking and judgment, and encourage dialogue, said a release. Now, gaining access to information about the VIHC is just a few computer keystrokes away. The community is invited to visit the website.
At the website, follow the prompts to learn about various funding opportunities through the Community Grants Program. Guidelines for submitting a project for funding are posted, and a funding application can be completed either directly online or by downloading the forms.
The website is also a gateway to other VIHC information, such as descriptions of recent projects funded by the Council, a listing of publications featuring V.I. history and culture funded by and available from the Council, a look at the Resource Center from which videotapes, books, posters, and informative literature on a variety of cultural, historical, and educational themes, local and otherwise, may be consulted or borrowed.
The website also provides related Internet links, such as the National Endowment for the Humanities, which funds the VIHC, and state humanities councils, the Library of Congress, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
The work of the Council, according to the website, "is accomplished by a board of thirteen volunteer directors, supported by a small staff." Simon K. Caines is executive director. VIHC is located at 1826 Kongens Gade 5-6, Suite 2, St. Thomas.
