Aug. 19, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today includes these announcements:
Fall 2002 Semester Begins Monday, Aug. 19
UVI welcomes all new and returning students and faculty. UVI's fall semester classes began Monday, Aug. 19. The university's full academic schedule and the 2002-2003 Catalog are available on UVI's Internet site at: www.uvi.edu.
SBDC Offers 'Time Management' Seminar
UVI's Small Business Development Center will present a small business seminar entitled: "Time Management: An Introductory Program" on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the UVI Small Business Development Center Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Admission to the seminar is $20. There is a $5 discount for those who pre-register for the session by 2 p.m. Wednesday. UVI faculty, staff and students are admitted free, but they must also pre-register.
The seminar presenter, Frederick Handleman, Esq., will cover various topics including: the basics of managing the use of time, becoming more efficient and effective, adjusting your attitude toward the use and importance of time, making decisions, and scheduling activities. Call UVI-SBDC at 776-3206 to pre-register or for additional information.
Meetings Set for Class of 2003
Meetings for members of the UVI graduating class of 2003 are being planned for both campuses. The sessions will cover graduation requirements and deadlines, selection of representatives to the Graduation Committee, and information from the Alumni Affairs Office.
On St. Thomas the meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, in the UVI Cafeteria. For more information call 693-1111 or 693-1046.
On St. Croix the meeting is slated for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, in the Student Activities Lounge of the Student Center. For more information call 692-4188.
VIUCEDD to Offer Courses for American Sign Language
UVI, through its University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), is offering two noncredit courses in American Sign Language. These courses – Training I and Training II – will train individuals to assist and communicate with persons who are deaf or hearing impaired. Registration on St. Thomas has concluded.
On St. Croix, registration will take place at the VIUCEDD office at No. 1 Golden Grove (at the entrance to Patrick Sweeney Headquarters), on Aug. 20, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For details, contact Wilbert Francis at 693-1189.
STARfest 8 Videos Have Arrived
The initial shipment of STARfest 8 videotapes has arrived at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Individuals who pre-ordered the videos can stop by the Reichhold Box Office to pick up their copies. Others who would like to obtain a video should call the Reichhold Box Office to reserve a copy. The tapes, which make great gifts for off-island relatives and friends and for those who missed the show, capture the excitement of STARfest 8 and the talents of more than 30 Virgin Islands performers. Videos are available for a minimum donation of $20.
"For Better, For Worse" Traveling to St. Croix
Tickets are on sale for two September presentations of David Edgecombe's popular play "For Better, For Worse" on St. Croix. The comedy enjoyed a seven-week run on St. Thomas during the summer. It will be presented at 8 p.m. on Sept. 7 and 8, at the Educational Complex in Kingshill. The play, which pokes fun at middle-class hypocrisies in a Caribbean society, is produced by the Reichhold Caribbean Repertory Company and directed by Edgecombe.
Tickets – $15 for adults and $8 for students – are on sale at the UVI Bookstore on the St. Croix Campus, at Sam Goody in Sunny Isle Shopping Center and at John E's Gallery in Christiansted.
Reichhold Season Tickets Are on Sale
Season tickets are now on sale for the 24th annual season at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. The 2002-2003 season opens with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist David Sanborn on Oct. 19. Also on the lineup are appearances by the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Folk Nativity, Eddie Palmieri, P'Your Passion, the Koresh Dance Company and STARfest 9. African Masks on Display at Reichhold Center
The UVI community is invited to view an art exhibition of African masks created by participants of the UVI Family Life Center during their Summer Enrichment Program. The exhibition is on display downstairs of the Reichhold Center. Art instructor Anita De La Cruz worked with 32 program participants ages 11 to 15 to produce this array of beautifully designed, colorful and expressive masks. The exhibit will remain on display until the end of September.
