Aug. 30, 2002 – Two Senate committee meetings were canceled this week in the wake of the Senate's marathon sessions Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Finance Committee chair, Sen. Alicia "Chucky" Hansen, intentionally canceled Wednesday's St. Croix meeting because the full body was still meeting on St. Thomas.
The Government Operations Committee chair, Emmett Hansen II, did not intend to cancel his Friday meeting on St. Croix, but did so after Tourism Commissioner Pamela Richards informed him by a "last minute letter" that she would be unable to attend. Hansen had asked Richards to detail her department's marketing plans for counteracting the cruise line pullouts from St. Croix and other issues. She was to have been the meeting's pivotal speaker.
Also invited were Andrew Rutnik, Licensing and Consumer Affairs commissioner; Franz Christian, Police commissioner; John Demo, president, Christiansted Restaurant and Retail Association; Hugh Dalton, owner, Harbor Night Productions; and Alice Henry, executive director, Our Town Frederiksted. Hansen informed the invitees of the cancellation and told his St. Thomas committee members not to waste time and money traveling to St. Croix.
Sen. Alicia Hansen said the Finance Committee would meet Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Legislative Conference Room on St. Croix. The extensive agenda, covering federal grant applications and appropriation transfers, is posted on the V.I. Legislature Web site.
