Sept. 11, 2002 – The St. Thomas-St. John chapter of the American Federation of Teachers has invited the district's senatorial candidates to participate in a panel discussion on "Issues Concerning the Status of Education in the Virgin Islands."
The event, essentially a candidate forum, is scheduled for Sept. 25 beginning at 6 p.m. at Palms Court Harborview Hotel. The public is invited to attend and question the participants about education issues.
Questioning will cover school operations, the Board of Education, funding, benefits and school staff salaries, moderator Carol Callwood said in a release.
The AFT event is among the first in what promise to be a full season of candidate forums sponsored by various community organizations.
Joe Aubain, executive director of the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber has invited the gubernatorial candidates to participate in a forum on Oct. 23. It is to be held at 6 p.m. at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort.
Aubain said the candidates for lieutenant governor will have their chance the following evening, Oct. 24, at the same time and location. Both events are open to the public.
The St. Thomas-St. John Hotel and Tourism Association will host a forum for senatorial candidates on Sept. 18. It's scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Beach Resort and Spa. However, this event is open only to members, association executive director Beverly Nicholson said.
