ANTIQUES AUCTION MOVING TO UVI CENTER

Nov. 19, 2002 – There are two big reasons you won't want to miss this season's fourth annual Antiques, Art and Collectibles Auction presented by the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas.
First, the event, set for Feb. 2, a Sunday, will take place at a new venue, the Sports and Fitness Center on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus.
Second, the offerings will include furniture, maps and collectibles from the estate of Amalia Mylner, a longtime member of the St. Thomas Synagogue.
After three years at the Old Stone Farmhouse, the event is moving to the UVI center because it offers plenty of indoor, air-conditioned space to display the hundreds of items available for bid or purchase, plenty of seating for visitors, lots of convenient parking and easy access for successful bidders to pick up their purchase items.
While the auction is leaving the Old Stone Farmhouse, the Old Stone Farmhouse isn't entirely leaving the auction. Owner/chef Brian Katz has agreed to cater the food that will be available on the day of the event.
As in previous years, previews of the items to go up for bidding will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on the day before the auction and again from 10 a.m. to noon on the day of the event. Items available for direct purchase will be on sale from tables beginning at 10 a.m. on the Sunday, too. The auction will begin at noon and is expected to run until about 4 p.m.
In addition to the items from the Mylner estate the auction will feature pieces from the private collections of Philip Sturm, Neil and Trudie Prior, and Atlantique.
Proceeds from the annual fund-raiser go toward maintenance of the St. Thomas Synagogue, a recently restored structure that dates from 1833. Registered as a National Historic Landmark, it is not only a house of worship but also a visitor attraction.
Proxy bidding can be arranged in advance; shipping off island can be arranged at the event. For details, call the synagogue office at 774-4312.
Anyone wishing to contribute items for the auction or sale tables is asked to call the synagogue office. Donations are tax-deductible.
For a preview of many items that will be in the auction, see the St. Thomas Synagogue Web site.
