Nov. 30, 2002 – The No. 1-ranked Duke University Blue Devils defeated the Old Dominion University Monarchs 65-52, No. 15-ranked University of Arkansas Razorbacks trounced the Hampton University Pirates 78-41, and the Boston College Eagles beat the University of Oregon Ducks 64-47 in the second day of women's play at the 2002 Paradise Jam tournament Friday evening at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.
Arkansas 78, Hampton 41
In the first game, the Lady Razorbacks (4-0) held the Lady Pirates (1-2) to just 19 percent from the field in the first half and 28 percent in the game. The Pirates also committed 25 turnovers and had just six assists.
For the Pirates, it was a different opponent but a showing similar to Thursday's opener against Duke. They missed their first five field goal attempts.
The score was 11-6 in favor of the Razorbacks when they went on a 9-0 run to take control of the game. The were able only to make isolated scores as Arkansas equaled or even doubled whatever offense Hampton could muster.
For Arkanses, Shameka Christon, Rudy Vaden and Cara Wright each had 13 points, and India Lewis had 11.
Brendy Ellis had 12 points to lead Hampton, with Bianca Johnson adding 10.
Duke 65, Old Dominion 52
The Lady Blue Devils used three offensive bursts to seal their victory and were happy to win over the Lady Monarchs, but players and coach alike were far from satisfied with their performance.
"I am not happy with our offensive effort tonight, but I give ODU a lot of credit for that," Duke's head coach, Gail Goestenkors, said following the game. "We had no patience offensively."
And player Iciss Tillis said: "Coach Goestenkors wrote on the board 'To whom much is given, much is expected.' Once again we did not play like a No. 1 team."
The Blue Devils (4-0) and the Monarchs (0-3) both shot 41 percent from the field in the first half. The Blue Devils made only one of their first seven field-goal attempts.
Then Duke went on a 15-0 offensive spurt to take a 19-6 lead as Old Dominion was held without a field goal for five minutes. Old Dominion committed 11 of its 14 first-half turnovers during this stretch.
The Monarchs then had a 19-5 run to take a one point lead, 25-24. The Blue Devils came back with a 9-0 run to close the half with a seven point lead, 37-30. Beard scored six of Duke's points in that run. "It is my job to step up and put a lot of pressure on their ball handler," Duke All-America Alana Beard said afterward. "It's just my job to get my team started defensively."
Old Dominion held Duke scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half but scored only two points themselves in that time. The Blue Devils then went on another 9-0 run during a six-minute stretch to take a 46-32 lead. But the Monarchs would not give the Blue Devils another challenge as they kept a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Two days into the three-day tournament, the top-ranked Blue Devils haven't seemed to find their rhythm. "Being in Paradise makes it difficult to focus, but we all have to deal with that." Goestenkors said. In the game against Old Dominion, she said, "We did not show a lot of poise against their pressure."
"We did not play the type of basketball that we need to play, and we gave up too many offensive rebounds," Beard said. "We need to put the little things together."
"Rebounding is the real key for me to really help my team." Tillis said.
Old Dominion's head coach, Wendy Larry, said: "We have to get better at our timing, but we're young. I am proud of the way we battled today."
Alana Beard had 28 points for Duke, and Iciss Tillis scored 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Okeishia Howard led Old Dominion with 16 points, followed by Monique Coker with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and Shareese Grant with 10 points.
Boston 64, Oregon 47
The Lady Eagles (3-0) soared over the Lady Ducks (1-3) to take the nightcap, 64-47.
The game was close for the first seven minutes, then Boston went on a 16-7 run for the next six minutes to take a 26-17 lead. The Ducks closed the half with a 9-4 run of their own to cut the deficit to six points, 30-26.
The Eagles out-rebounded the Ducks 23-11 in the first half and 40-23 for the game. Oregon got to within three points of the Boston at 35-32 with 15:41 left in the game. However, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run in the next three and half minutes to take a commanding 44-32 lead that put the game out of the Ducks' reach.
Jessalyn Deveny had 25 points to lead Boston, and Becky Gottstein had 11. Deveny grabbed eight rebounds.
Catherine Kraayeveld had 12 points to lead the Lady Ducks, and Shaquala Williams had 11. Kraayeveld also had nine rebounds.
Saturday night schedule
In the concluding 2002 Paradise Jam women's action on Saturday evening, it's Boston vs. South Carolina at 4 p.m., Hampton vs. Old Dominion at 6:15 p.m. and Duke vs. Arkansas at 8:30 p.m. Paradise Jam tickets are $5 for UVI students with ID, $10 for V.I. resident non-students with ID and $40 for non-residents.
