MAIN STREET TO 'CLOSE' TO ACCOMMODATE CROWDS

Dec. 11, 2002 – What with cruise ships in port, snowbirds in hotels, and residents out and about on holiday shopping sprees, the Police Department is anticipating a lot of people crowding into downtown Charlotte Amalie on three days coming up later this month.
So many, in fact, that authorities have decided to close Main Street to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on those days — next Wednesday, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
That means not only no driving but also no parking on the town's principal shopping artery at those times. And no parking at other off-limits areas such as the waterfront apron, as well.
Traffic Bureau and bicycle patrol officers will keep tabs on all vehicular traffic in the downtown area on those days, and "illegal or improperly parked vehicles will receive citations," a release issued on Wednesday stated.
St. Thomas Deputy Police Chief Theodore Carty said drivers should utilize the downtown paid parking lots.
