April 28, 2003 – The bullet-riddled body of a man was found at 2:02 p.m. Monday on the roadside of the Donoe bypass near Mandahl. Police did not immediately release the dead man's name, pending notification of next of kin.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said he had little information on the territory's 11th recorded homicide of 2003 and the ninth on St. Thomas. It is the first reported slaying in more than five weeks.
Sirens pierced the air Monday afternoon from Red Hook to Skyline Drive as police vehicles headed to the scene. At one point, police cars chased a suspect in a late-model gold-colored Ford Explorer; but Hannah said he didn't know if officers had captured anyone. He also couldn't say if there were any witnesses to the shooting in the heavily populated area.
An investigation is under way. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Major Crime Unit at 774-2196, the Crime Line at 777-8711 or the Investigations Bureau at 774-4050. Calls and information will be held in the "strictest of confidence," Hannah said.
