July 22, 2003 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull was released Monday morning from the Roy L. Schneider Hospital after a week's stay. Turnbull was admitted to the hospital Monday, July 14, suffering from a bleeding ulcer.
In a release from Government House, Dr. Thelma Ruth Watson, one of the governor's attending physicians, said Turnbull "has recovered and is being released and is being advised to continue his recuperation by engaging in limited business activities and taking additional rest."
During his hospital stay Turnbull acted on several bills and remained in charge of the government.
While needing additional rest to aid his recuperation, Turnbull is facing some tough issues.
During his hospitalization the Senate approved a significantly altered version of Turnbull's $235 million bond-issue borrowing measure. The primary difference between what Turnbull submitted and the bill that was passed is the $100 million Turnbull earmarked for operating capital. The Senate's version of the bill allots that amount for paying tax returns and vendors – payments that were set aside last month so the government could make payroll.
The new bill also eliminated the allocation of $80 million for a new hotel on St. Croix.
Sources in the community have suggested the governor may veto the bill because of the restrictions placed by the Senate.
The release said that upon leaving the hospital Turnbull had high praise for the treatment he received during his stay.
Along with Watson he was attended by Dr. Sidney Commissiong and Dr. Lawrence Goldman.
