July 31, 2003 – All St. Thomas potable water customers except those on the East End will be without service between 1 and 5 a.m. Friday, according to the Water and Power Authority.
Those accustomed to rising early may want to fill jugs with water before going to bed Thursday for personal use in the predawn hours of Friday.
WAPA has scheduled the cutoff in order to install "a second bypass line and a pressure-relief valve at the Sara Hill pumping station to increase the reliability of the main pumping station on St. Thomas," according to a release distributed by the utility on Thursday afternoon.
It said that the backup system thus being created "will allow WAPA to continue to provide potable water service to the Charlotte Amalie potable water system if the pressure-relief valve at the main pumping station should fail."
